What Are Custom Reports?

Custom Reports allow you to generate complex or large reports without waiting for them to load immediately. Instead of processing the report within your browser session, the platform generates it as a background job.

These reports give you complete control over how your data is structured and delivered. Unlike standard reports, it lets you build your own dataset by choosing exactly which metrics, dimensions, and filters you want to include. This means every report can be tailored to your specific goals - whether you're analyzing performance, comparing trends, or pulling detailed breakdowns.

This flexibility makes Custom Reports a fully customizable, user‑driven reporting experience and ensures:

  • More reliable reporting for all users.

  • Reduced timeouts and loading delays.

  • Smooth performance, even for large datasets.

Dimensions Available in Custom Reports Only

The following dimensions are available in Custom Reports only. They are not available in the standard Analytics reports. This is because these dimensions generate large, row-heavy datasets that can cause timeouts and incomplete results when processed in a standard report view.

Dimension

What it shows

Page type

The type of page where your ad was served (e.g., search results, category, home)

Search term

The exact shopper search query that triggered your ad

Stemmed search term

A normalized version of the search query, grouping variations of the same term

Search term type

The match type used to associate a search term and keywords entered for the campaign.

  • Entered – If the search term matches exactly what has been entered manually by the Commerce Max user

  • Searched – The search term matches what was searched by a shopper on the retailer's website

  • Null – For all other use cases corresponding to automatic keywords.

Search term targeting

Manual targeting happens when you add keywords to your campaign. Automatic targeting happens when the AI engine associates a keyword to your campaign.

  • Manual targeting – If the search term matches either a keyword entered on CMax or one of the variations created from stemming a raw CMax keyword

  • Automatic targeting – All other search terms added via the automated keyword tool

Targeted keyword type

The match intent of the keyword (branded, conquesting, or generic)

Served category

The product category page where your ad appeared

Environment

The device environment where your ad was shown (e.g., web, mobile, app)

Custom Report FAQs

How can custom reports make reporting easier?

Custom Reports lets you create exports around the dimensions and metrics that matter most to your business. You can tailor the columns, time period, and filters to match your reporting needs, then download a clearly organized file for analysis, business reviews, or client conversations.

How will I know when my report is ready?

The Reports Library checks report status automatically every 10 seconds while the browser tab is active. Status values include Scheduled, Building, Ready, Expired, or Failed.

Why did my report fail?

Reports may fail if:

  • The dataset is too large.

  • A selected field is invalid.

  • There’s a temporary system issue.

Try reducing the date range or filters, then resubmit. If it still fails, please contact our customer support team.

Can I leave the page while the report is generating?

Yes. Reports continue to process even if you move to another section, close your browser, or log out.

Can I download my report in different formats?

Yes, reports can be downloaded as Excel (.xlsx) or CSV, and this can only be selected when the report is being built, not after it's generated.

Do I need to regenerate the same report later?

Custom reports get deleted after 7 days. Within that period, you can regenerate the report if the underlying data has changed. Otherwise, you can reuse the same download.

What does the Month time dimension do?

Month groups report rows at monthly granularity, making it easier to analyze trends without manually aggregating daily exports. Select Month in the Time dimension group; you can also save and reload it when you edit the report.

Can I control the order of columns in the downloaded report?

Yes. Drag selected dimensions and metrics into the order you need. The chosen order is saved with the report and preserved in the downloaded file. When you move a dimension, its selected filters move with it.

How are downloaded report filenames generated?

Reports Library downloads retain the generated filename base and append a sanitized version of the saved report name. Spaces and unsafe filename characters are replaced with underscores, repeated underscores are collapsed, and the appended name is trimmed and length-limited. Save the report with a descriptive name before downloading.

Why are some dimensions only available in Custom Reports?

Dimensions like Page Type, Search Term, Targeted Keyword Type, Served Category, and Environment generate large datasets. Processing them in a standard report view can cause slow load times, timeouts, and incomplete results, especially across longer date ranges or larger accounts.

Custom Reports handle these datasets in the background and deliver results as a downloadable file, so you always get complete and reliable data. For the full list of dimensions available exclusively in Custom Reports, see the What Are Custom Reports? step.
