Getting Started With Criteo MCP

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and data — including Criteo. Once you connect your approved AI tool to Criteo MCP, you can ask questions about your campaigns, pull performance data, and explore insights in plain language, without navigating the platform or building custom data pipelines.

This article covers what you can do with Criteo MCP, how to connect your AI tool, and how to validate and troubleshoot your setup. For background on what MCP is and how Criteo approaches it, see What is MCP and Why Does It Matter?

What You Can Do with Criteo MCP

Available capabilities depend on the Criteo products your organization has access to and how your connection is configured.

Retail Media (Commerce Max)

Use Criteo Commerce Max MCP to understand your retail media portfolio, analyze campaign performance, and troubleshoot issues across retailers.

Portfolio and account visibility

  • List retailers in your advertiser portfolio.

  • Discover retailer offerings (e.g., whether a retailer supports Onsite Video).

  • View campaign structures, configurations, and line-item details.

  • Check where your products are sold and whether they are out of stock at specific retailers.

Performance analytics

  • Break down performance by campaign, line item, device, geography, and time.

  • Compare attribution windows: 7-day, 14-day, and 30-day post-click.

  • Compare post-click and post-view performance.

  • Pull statistics for up to 100 days per request (up to three years of historical data may be available; requests exceeding 100 days return an error).

  • Access more than 100 standard metrics, including conversions, revenue, and return on ad spend (ROAS).

Planning and reporting

  • Get media planning and budget reallocation recommendations.

  • Generate Quarterly Business Reviews highlighting key metrics and insights.

The Criteo Knowledge Agent

The Criteo Knowledge Agent is a separate MCP server that adds a product knowledge layer to your existing Criteo MCP setup. Where the Retail Media MCP handles data and actions — campaign metrics, account structure, and performance results — the Knowledge Agent handles product questions: what features do, how settings work, and how to interpret what you're seeing.

Register it as an additional MCP server alongside your existing connection. No separate credentials are required.

Once connected, your AI agent can answer both "how is my campaign performing?" and "why might that be happening?" in the same conversation.

Example questions the Knowledge Agent can answer:

  • "Why is my line item showing as Active but not delivering?"

  • "What is the difference between Retailer Budget and Criteo Budget?"

  • "Which page types does a retailer need to support for Sponsored Products?"

Before You Start

Confirm the following before connecting:

Requirement

Notes

A compatible AI tool

Claude (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise), ChatGPT, Langdock, Cursor, or another Criteo-approved AI environment.

An active Criteo account

You must have an account that can authenticate to the Criteo accounts enabled for your connection.

Criteo approval and an endpoint URL

Your Criteo representative arranges access and provides the endpoint URL. The URL is specific to your connection and includes the MCP path. Do not guess or use a shared URL.

The correct authentication method

OAuth for standard connections. No authentication for key-based URLs — the credential is already included in the URL.

Connect to Criteo MCP

The connection process follows the same pattern across most AI tools:

  1. Confirm that Criteo has approved your access and provided the endpoint URL.

  2. Open the connection or connector settings in your AI tool.

  3. Add a custom connector, MCP server, or MCP app (the label varies by tool).

  4. Enter Criteo as the connection name.

  5. Paste the endpoint URL provided by Criteo, including the MCP path.

  6. Select the authentication method for your connection:

    • For a standard connection: select OAuth.

    • For a key-based URL: select None or No sign in.

  7. Complete the Criteo sign-in and approve access when prompted (OAuth only).

  8. Enable the Criteo connector in a conversation or chat session.

For client-specific instructions, see the sections below.

Set Up in Claude

Remote MCP custom connectors are available on Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Free plans are limited to one custom connector.

For the latest requirements, see Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP.

Pro and Max Plans

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.

  2. Select +, then Add custom connector.

  3. Enter Criteo as the connector name.

  4. Paste the endpoint URL provided by Criteo, including the MCP path.

  5. Leave Advanced settings untouched.

  6. Click Add.

  7. Click Connect and complete the Criteo sign-in and consent screens.

  8. Enable the Criteo connector in the conversation where you want to use it.

Team and Enterprise Plans

An Owner or authorized organization administrator must add the connector for the organization before individual users can connect.

Organization owner — add the connector:

  1. Open Organization settings → Connectors.

  2. Select Add → Custom → Web.

  3. Enter Criteo as the connector name.

  4. Paste the endpoint URL provided by Criteo, including the MCP path.

  5. Click Add.

Each user — connect your own account:

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.

  2. Find the Criteo connector added by your organization owner.

  3. Select Connect and complete the Criteo sign-in and consent screens.

  4. Enable the connector in the conversation where you want to use it.

Set Up in ChatGPT

ChatGPT plan requirements, workspace settings, and MCP functionality can change. Check the current Developer Mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT documentation before starting.

  1. Ask your ChatGPT workspace administrator to enable Developer Mode or the custom MCP connector setting.

  2. Go to Settings → Apps & Connectors → Add new connector.

  3. Enter Criteo as the app name.

  4. Paste the endpoint URL provided by Criteo, including the MCP path.

  5. Select OAuth for a standard connection, or None for a key-based URL.

  6. Select Create and complete sign-in when prompted.

  7. Start a new chat and enable Criteo from the connector menu.

Validate Your Connection

After setup, confirm the connection is working before running an analysis:

  1. Check that the Criteo connector shows as connected in your AI tool.

  2. Ask the assistant to list the Criteo accounts it can access.

  3. Confirm the returned accounts match the accounts Criteo enabled for you.

  4. Run a simple read request to verify data access.

Example prompts to test your connection:

  • "List the Criteo accounts I can access."

  • "Summarize campaign performance over the last seven days."

  • "Which retailers in my portfolio support Onsite Video?"

  • "Compare post-click and post-view performance for the last 30 days."

  • "Which audiences are most relevant for a spring travel acquisition campaign?"

If the accounts returned do not match your expected access, stop using the connection and contact your Criteo representative before continuing.

Security and Access

Criteo MCP connects to Criteo data through permissioned APIs. Your access is determined by the Criteo accounts and permissions enabled for your specific connection.

  • Use only the endpoint URL provided by Criteo.

  • Do not share an OAuth session or a key-based URL with other users.

  • If the account list returned by the assistant does not match your expected access, stop using the connection and contact your Criteo representative.

  • MCP does not replace standard Criteo workflows. Use the Commerce Max platform to review and activate recommendations where required.

Troubleshooting

The connection cannot be authenticated. Check that you are using the exact endpoint URL provided by Criteo, including the MCP path. For a standard connection, select OAuth. For a key-based URL, select None or No sign in — the credential is already included in the URL.

The connector is not available in Claude (Team or Enterprise plan). An Owner or authorized administrator must add the connector to the organization before individual users can connect. For Pro or Max plans, add the connector yourself from Settings → Connectors.

The connector is not available in ChatGPT. Ask your workspace administrator to confirm that Developer Mode or the custom MCP connector setting is enabled, then check the current OpenAI documentation for plan and workspace requirements.

The returned accounts are not the expected accounts. Do not continue using the connection. Contact your Criteo representative to verify which accounts are enabled for your connection. If you need access to specific accounts only, ask about a key-based connection.

A Retail Media request returns a date-range error. Commerce Max MCP supports a maximum date range of 100 days per request. Split longer date ranges across multiple requests.
